Neetroplus nematopus
Outside the breeding season Neetroplus nematopus is a relatively tolerant fish, but during the breeding season very aggressive towards co-inhabitants. The species should be kept in pairs. A territory is being established. The aquarium should be densely planted with hardy plants. Furthermore, the aquarium should be decorated with roots and stones. There should also be burrows where eggs can be deposited. There are few requirements for the water composition. However, a weekly 25 percent water change is recommended.
This species was described in 1867 by Albert Günther.
Synonyms: Hypsophrys nematopus, Neetroplus nematoplus, Neetroplus nicaraguensis, Neetroplus fluviatilis.
Diet
Solid live food should be givenas food. Beef heart and dry food are also accepted.
Breeding Neetroplus nematopus
The breeding of Neetroplus nematopus is fairly easy. However, it is recommended to set up a spacious aquarium for breeding. After a prolonged courtship of several days, 50-60 eggs are deposited in a burrow and fertilized. The eggs hatch after 5-6 days. After another week, the young swim free. They can be raised with Artemia nauplii and finely rubbed dry food.
