This is a short video of the habitat and behavior of Fundulopanchax kribianus in its natural environment. This species inhabits very shallow areas adjacent to the main stream of the ...watercourse and appears to have a complex habitat requirement in the upper reaches of the Ndonga River, Cameroon.
The locations where this species occurs are hydraulically complex where they were found to be restricted to isolated secondary channels and pools which form an interconnected braided network when flooding occurs.
In addition to the focus species, Benitochromis nigrodorsalis, Aphyosemion ahli and several Epiplatys and Clarias species are found. The dense canopy cover makes underwater films difficult due to the low light conditions so please excuse the quality of some of the images.Show More

This footage was taken in October 2020.
The island of São Tomé has a very high precipitation (up to 6, 000 mm). The interior of São Tomé has peaks that reach ...up to approximately 2000 metres above sea level. The rivers draining the island radiate from this high elevation at steep gradients, transition between hydraulic units occur over short distances in this region.
The Rio Grande is the biggest river system on the island and is depicted in this video. The inland waters of São Tomé are inhabited by amphidromous and anadromous fish species.
Sicydium bustamantei (DD), Liza grandisquamis (DD) and Sicydium bustamantei were common in the swift flowing Rio Grande.

I compiled some highlights from the October 2018 Cameroon survey. I think its the first time i have seen Knifefish (Papyrocranus afer) on the underwater videos before at 3:20. Also ...what looks like Pelmatolapia mariae at 2:00.
I studied the freshwater biodiversity (fish and Odonata) over four days. The study focus was small westward flowing streams (+- 2 m-3 m wide) approximately 60 km south east of Doula, Cameroon.
Fish diversity was high and typical of the Southern Gulf of Guinea Drainage's Freshwater Ecoregion with approximately 40 species of fish observed during the 4 day survey.
The background sounds were recorded using bioacoustic recording equipment in the morning next a stream under secondary forest. From 1:30 a rainstorm passes over the area.

In June 2019 I conducted a survey of tributaries flowing into the Nyong River, Cameroon.
The timing of the survey coincided with the "small" rainfall season, whereby river volumes were observed ...to be elevated. Areas where the survey focused included flowing streams under gallery riparian forest.
Watercourses were alluvium controlled. Substrates were frequently gravel and sand with less frequent areas with cascades over bedrock and associated boulders. In-stream and marginal vegetation included dense stands of both inundated and exposed Anubias sp.
Observed fish species diversity was low due to the high water levels observed. Bryconalestes longipinnis was the most frequently observed fish during the survey. Amphilidae species were also found in the cascade habitats.
Nothobranchiidae were observed in the slower waters, these included Chromaphyosemion loennbergii and Epiplatys zenkeri.
The bio-accoustic recording was obtained in secondary littoral forest on the northern bank of the Sanaga River.
