In this video I go through the stages of surveying for Killifish in a head-water rain-forest stream located in the Dodo River system of South Western Ivory Coast (Côte d'Ivoire) ...- November 2019.
The video starts as I am walking through secondary side-slope forest down into the valley below (0:15). I arrive at the top of the watercourse to find a shallow swamp with sandy substrates (0:35). Typically one would expect thick detritus in this habitat type, however the gradient of the watercourse produced a denser sandy substrate. As I move downstream I encounter rocky habitats with still very shallow waters and associated specialized Odonata (0:58 and 2:32).
As I move further downstream the watercourse grows as more drainage lines merge with the system. I then find a shallow pool with submerged plants and indications of surface activity - a clear sign of Killifish (1:15).
The sampling of this habitat yielded two species of Killifish, Epiplatys dageti (1:42) and Epiplatys cf. olbrechtsi (2:18). E. dageti was widespread throughout the Dodo River system tributaries, whilst E cf. olbrechtsi was restricted to watercourses with adjacent intact riparian cover. Hemichromis fasciatus and a Clarias sp, were also observed with the above taxa.
The sound for this video was obtained in situ with bio-accoustic recordings. Additional videos made in the Dodo River can be found at the link below:

“Some beautiful habitats in Guinea” is the title of this video. In Guinea are still some unpolluted rivers to find, and I had the opportunity to do some snorkeling in ...a few of them. In this video I show you the best habitat (their natural habitat) of the cichlids that live in the relevant rivers. Some of the cichlids are very attractive and even popular within the aquarium hobbyist. So if you make the choice to set up an aquarium for one of these beautiful cichlids I hope you will find some Info and especially inspiration in my video, to set up a most perfect imitation of their natural habitat. And how wonderful would it be if you show me some pics of your aquarium setup.Show More

#BAC2022 – Nun River basin, in the north of Bayelsa State, Nigeria. By Biswarup Goon

BIOTOPE IN NATURE: Nun River is the longest (160km) continuation of the Niger River. The Nun River begins near the village of Aboh, where the Niger River splits in two, ...forming Nun and Forcados, flows through the rain forests, swamps and mangroves, and empties into the Gulf of Guinea. Flooding from monsoon rains lasts from June to September, then the water level drops, and in February, with the arrival of the flood waters from the Niger River, rises again.
Forest rivers and streams of the Nun River basin are home to many species of fish and other aquatic organisms. Although oil production causes serious damage to the local nature, yet in clean rivers significant biodiversity can be found. Mainly semi-aquatic plants grow in places where sun can reach the earth surface through the trees.

#BAC2023 Wetland puddle in the Male river catchment, Bo region, Sierra Leone. BY Péter Rózsahegyi.

BIOTOPE IN NATURE: In the southern part of Sierra Leone, the climate is generally hot and humid. This lowland region has several networks of rivers and streams that frequently flow ...out of their basin, due to periodic flooding commonly peaking from April to May and July to September.
The huge difference in the fallen rain (difference between July to October in 2022 was ca. 400mm) results are flooded areas and marshlands. After the rivers and streams get flooded, the recending water create pools where inhabitants continue their life waiting for the next flood. This pools have colored water cause of the tannins from botanicals.
In these regions we can make difference between closed canopy and open capony streams, puddle systems. In open canopy parts you can find more flora and fauna, because of the hiding places provided by plants. The closed canopy parts have accumulated wood and leafy debris which are darker habitat. In both habitats the submerged terrestrial vegetation are frequent.

Freshwater Biodiversity in a head-water tributary in south western Ivory Coast in April 2019.
The ecoregion is the Ebernoe freshwater ecoregion within the Upper Guinea Ichthyological province. The fish fauna in ...the shallow vegetated pools were dominated by Chromidotilapia guntheri (3:19) and Epiplays dageti (3:35). The shallow flowing clear streams were inhabited by an abundance of Macrobrachium and three Enteromius species. The Enteromius with the orange fins is problematic as it fits the description of Enteromius tiekoroi and doesn't quite fit with the Enteromius trispilos group (2:45). So far, thanks to the help of Steven Gran, I identify the orange finned barb as Enteromius traorei, which indicates a significant range extension to systems adjacent the Cavally River.
Within the fast shallow waters Poropanchax rancureli were also numerous (3:50). An interesting variation of the Epiplatys cf. olbrechtsi (3:38) was also found in shallow isolated pools on the river floodplains.
I am still in the process of identifying all of the fish, the other Enteromius are also currently problematic. I am hoping to update this as I am able to accurately define the species.
