Nakantenga Island

Nakantenga Island is the smallest of the three Maleri Islands. The island is located in the southwest of Lake Malawi. The island lies in the Lake Malawi National Park. Fishing is not allowed along the coast of the park. Fishing is only permitted 100 meters from the coast.

The island is uninhabited. It consists mainly of rocks with a few trees on top. Underwater, there are mainly rocks with a layer of detritus on the bottom. Under the layer of detritus, the substrate is coarser than many people expect.

Substrate at Nakantenga Island

The substrate around the island consists mainly of pebbles or small pieces of rock. It is therefore not sand, as is often thought.
