Chizumulu Island

Chizumulu Island is located approximately halfway across Lake Malawi. The island is about 8 kilometers west of Likoma Island. Both islands are inhabited. The island has approximately 4,000 inhabitants. Although both islands are located close to the coast of Mozambique, they belong to Malawi. This was caused by Anglican missionaries from the west crossing Lake Malawi and arriving at the islands.

Originally, the British claimed ownership of the entire Lake Malawi. It was not until 1954 that they signed an agreement dividing Lake Malawi between the neighboring countries. This placed Chizumulu Island in the territorial waters of Mozambique. Both islands therefore form an enclave.
