Betta hipposideros

Betta hipposideros owes its name (from Latin) to the horseshoe-shaped symbols on its throat.

Origin

The type specimen is from Selangor; Malaysia. Other capture sites are Perak; Malaysia and Riau; Sumatra.

Length

Betta hipposideros ken reach an overall length of about 90 mm TL.

Keeping Betta hipposideros

Betta hipposideros is easy to keep; and a 60 cm aquarium is sufficient for a small group (5-6 specimens). Since this large yellow Betta occurs in the wild with Betta livida, the values mentioned there are recommended, which also applies to the aquarium’s decoration.

Food, as with Betta chloropharynx, is not a problem.

Reproduction of Betta hipposideros

Already successfully mimicked several times in Malaysia; mating proceeds like that of related species, as does rearing the young. It is not difficult to imitate these mouthbrooders.
