List of plants: No plants were purposely grown in this tank as no plants are present underwater in the habitat. However, plants do tend ...to grow along the banks of the creek and send roots into the creeks. In this aquarium, the root system of a Spathiphyllum sp. was used in order to mimic the root system that was present in the video I used for inspiration of this design.
Description of decorations: First, a structure of lava rock and driftwood was used to built and covered with foam to build up the slope and provide depth. Additionally, the lava rock, with some flow pushed into the structure, should provide porous areas for beneficial bacteria to develop. Next, the foam was covered with a mixture of crushed ADA Amazonia, pool sand, and crushed leaves. A layer of various leaves procured from Tannin Aquatics was then placed along the slope. Multiple small twigs from driftwood was interspersed amongst the leaves. A large driftwood structure was assembled to resemble the same feature in my inspiration video. A layer of sand was placed in front of this structure. Finally, a few seed pods (also from Tannin Aquatics) and twigs were placed into the sand.

Self-critic: I know that these are not the plants which ...are in the natural habitat. I made some mistakes in plantings at the beginning, and I will change that into 100% Ludwigia plantings. But at the moment I do not want to stress my Piranhas with new plantings and workings in the aquarium because it seems that they are starting with the breeding mode – a bigger one is a little bit more aggressive and I saw a whole in the substrate. So as soon as possible I will change the plants, but not now at the moment. With the very big Anubias sitting on the top of the roots which are hanging into the water, I tried to imitate leaves on wood. The Piranhas seem to like the shadow very much.Show More

This is my biotope aquarium, which is a work in progress. The current inhabitants are 20 x Cardinal tetras and 1 x Butterfly pleco (L168). I'll soon be ...adding 10 x Corydoras habrosus. I know the pleco is native to the Rio Negro not the Orinoco. However, finding an L number from the Orinoco was difficult.

BIOTOPE IN NATURE: The El Tuparro National Park is the biggest river catchment area to west of Rio Orinoco. The biggest part of it consist of flooded/non flooded savannas and ...as we head closer to the main stream the fooded forests are more typical.
The habitat that I want to introduce is next to the borderline of Venezuela and Colombia near Isla Santa Isabel. It is a flooded forest biotope, circa 200m far from the main branch of the Rio Orinoco.
I found a video from the 1990's, which tourned out to be my greatest motivitation to create my biotope aquarium. In this habitat several fish species can be found like Paracheirodon axelrodi, Axelrodia riesei, Hemigrammus rubrostriatus. And some cichlid species too, such as Dicrossus filamentosus and Aequidens metae. Specific submerged plant e.g. Najas guadalupensis. The substrate is not too visible because of the leaf litter, algae and mass of bacteria.
This palm tree Mauritia flexuosa is very important to the native warao indians.

Fische in naturnahen Becken zu Pflegen ist für mich eine Selbstverständlichkeit. Es Müssen nicht immer besondere Fische sein.
Beckendaten.
Fassungsvermögen: 54L
Beleuchtung: LED-Lampe von Zetlight.
Einrichtung: Das Becken ist einem Klarwasserbach in Venezuela nachempfunden. ...Seemandelbaumblätter, Schwemmholz und weisser Quarzsand bilden die Einrichtung.
Bepflanzung: Momentan Cabomba caroliniana.
Fische: Paracheirodon axelrodi, Mikrogeophagus ramirezi.
Wirbellose: Pomacea bridgesii
Wasser: T: 28°C, PH: 6,0. GH: 6°dGH (leichte Schwankungen möglich)
Filter: JBL CristalProfi Greenline i60
Pflege: Wöchentlicher Wasserwechsel ca. 20% mit über Torf vorgefiltertem Wasser ohne weitere zusätze. Seemandelbaumblätter werden laufend ersetzt.
Fütterung: Schwarze, Weisse und Rote Mückenlarven gelegentlich Cyclops und Artemia als Frostfutter und getrocknete Tubiflex. Die Fütterung erfolgt jeweils Morgens und abends mit abwechselnden Futtersorten. Auf Flockenfutter verzichte ich ganz.
Besonderes: Das Becken hat Wetterbedingte leichte Temperaturschwankungen zwischen 25 und 32°C ähnlich den Gegebenheiten in der Natur.
Zukünftige Änderungen: Reduktion der Apfelschnecken und Pflanzenwechsel. Cabomba furcata oder eine andere passende Pflanze soll zukünftig das Becken zieren.Show More

BIOTOPE IN NATURE: Morichals are small rivers, streams or lagoons surrounded by moriche palms (Mauritia flexuosa) which is a palm that only grows and thrives where its roots can be ...underwater. Morichals is just the name given in Spanish to a large group of moriche palms. A good example of a morichal is in the Morichal Largo river in northeastern Venezuela. But you will generally find them all over the Venezuelan and Columbian low lands, but also in the savannah areas of the Amazon river basin.
This interesting ecosystem supports a rich variety of fish fauna both in the mainstream and in the small streams leading into the main Morichal. These palms get their water by digging their roots in the water, and so they are a natural filter to the water. That’s why these waters are always crystal clear.
But you will also find black water morichals, that’s because the leaves and other botanicals of the palms fall into the water and release tannins.

Seit ich mit zwölf Jahren mein erstes gebrauchtes Aquarium gekauft habe, habe ich immer ein oder mehrere Aquarien gehabt. Ich habe sogar eine Garage zu einem Zuchtraum umgebaut, in dem ich 50 Aquarien mit insgesamt etwa 10.000 Litern Wasser hatte. Derzeit habe ich zwei Aquarien: ein 1.250-Liter-Tanganjika-Aquarium und ein 250-Liter-Gemeinschaftsaquarium mit Pflanzen. Seit 10 Jahren arbeite ich als Autor und Fotograf an dieser Website.
